Definition

What Attention and Regulation Therapy Actually Treats

Attention and self-regulation involve the ability to focus on a task, manage emotions, control impulses, and shift between calm and active states as the situation requires. These skills are foundational for learning, friendships, and family life.

Children who struggle with attention or regulation may have trouble sitting still, finishing tasks, transitioning between activities, or calming down when upset. These challenges can stem from sensory processing differences, ADHD, anxiety, or a combination of factors.

Attention and regulation challenges are not related to intelligence or effort. They reflect how the nervous system manages arousal, focus, and emotional responses, and they respond well to thoughtful, skill-based support.

Attention and regulation therapy focuses on building self-awareness, calming strategies, and the ability to engage productively with daily demands.

Signs Attention and Regulation Therapy May Help

  • Difficulty starting or finishing tasks
  • Frequent meltdowns or strong emotional reactions
  • Trouble transitioning between activities
  • Constant movement or fidgeting
  • Difficulty waiting, taking turns, or managing impulses
  • Trouble calming down once upset
  • Difficulty sustaining attention during preferred and non-preferred tasks
  • Teacher or family concerns about classroom or home behavior
Treatment

How Summit Therapy Supports Attention and Regulation

Treatment begins with a comprehensive evaluation that looks at sensory processing, motor skills, executive function, and how attention and regulation affect daily life. From there, a personalized plan is built using evidence-based approaches.

Sessions help children build self-awareness of their own state, identify what helps them regulate, and practice strategies that work for them. Activities are engaging and individualized, blending sensory-motor work, structured tasks, and reflection in age-appropriate ways.

Your child will work with the same therapist throughout the process, allowing for trust and consistent skill development.

Parents and teachers receive practical strategies to support regulation at home and at school, so the work in the clinic translates into everyday life.

FAQs

Is this therapy only for children with ADHD?

No. While many children with ADHD benefit, attention and regulation therapy also helps children with sensory differences, anxiety, autism, and a wide range of other profiles. A diagnosis is not required to start. The evaluation looks at the full picture.

How is this different from behavior therapy?

Behavior therapy focuses on shaping specific behaviors, while attention and regulation therapy targets the underlying nervous system and skill foundations that drive behavior. The two approaches often complement each other. We can collaborate with behavior providers when both are part of your child's care.

Will my child learn to manage themselves?

Yes. The goal is for children to develop their own awareness and toolkit of strategies, not to depend on adults to manage them. Independence in regulation is a long-term skill that grows with practice and support.

Do you work with schools to support classroom regulation?

Yes. With family permission, we coordinate with teachers and school staff to align strategies across settings. Consistent support at home and school accelerates progress. Just let us know who at the school you would like us to connect with.
