Definition

What Speech Delay Therapy Actually Treats

Speech delay refers to a child being slower than expected to develop the ability to produce speech sounds and use spoken words. It is different from a language delay, although the two often overlap. A child with a speech delay may understand language well but have difficulty making the sounds and words needed to express themselves.

Some children produce only a handful of words past the age when peers are speaking in short sentences. Others have words but use them inconsistently, or speak in ways that are hard for unfamiliar listeners to understand.

Speech delays are not related to intelligence or effort. They reflect that the speech system is developing on a slower timeline and often benefits from targeted support to help build the underlying skills.

Speech delay therapy focuses on growing a child's spoken vocabulary, building accurate sound production, and supporting confident, functional communication.

Signs & Symptoms

Signs Speech Delay Therapy May Help

Children develop speech at slightly different rates, but certain milestones provide helpful guideposts. When development is clearly behind, early support is more effective than waiting and watching.

Signs that speech delay therapy may help include:

  • Few or no words by 15 to 18 months
  • Not combining words by age 2
  • Speech that is mostly unintelligible past age 3
  • Relying on gestures, grunts, or pointing instead of words
  • Frustration or meltdowns related to communication
  • A noticeable gap between what a child understands and what they can say
  • Limited variety in the sounds a child produces
  • A pediatrician or family concern about late talking
Treatment

How Summit Therapy Treats Speech Delays

Treatment begins with a comprehensive evaluation that looks at sound production, vocabulary, oral motor skills, and overall communication. From there, a personalized plan is built using evidence-based, developmentally appropriate approaches.

Sessions are play-based and engaging, designed to make speech practice feel natural and rewarding. We use your child's interests to drive activities that build sounds, words, and meaningful communication.

Your child will work with the same speech-language pathologist throughout the process, allowing for trust, consistency, and faster progress.

Parent coaching is a core part of our approach. You will learn practical, evidence-based strategies to use during everyday routines so language growth continues at home.

FAQs

Is my child a late talker or do they have a true speech delay?

Some late talkers catch up on their own, while others benefit greatly from therapy. The only reliable way to tell is through a comprehensive evaluation that looks at the full picture of communication. Early therapy is low-risk and often shortens the time to catch-up.

Should we just wait and see?

Waiting is rarely the best approach when there are concerns about speech development. Early therapy takes advantage of the most active period of brain development for language. If your child catches up quickly, therapy ends. If not, you have a meaningful head start.

Will my child need therapy forever?

Most children with speech delays do not need long-term therapy. Many make significant progress in months to a year or two of consistent sessions. Your speech-language pathologist will set goals, track progress, and adjust the plan as your child grows.

Do I need a referral to start speech therapy in Texas?

In most cases, no. Texas allows direct access to speech therapy, so you can call Summit Therapy directly to request an evaluation. Some insurance plans require a physician referral for coverage, and we can help you sort that out before your first appointment.
