Gather Important Documents
Bring any prior evaluations, medical records, school reports, or referrals that can help your therapist better understand your needs.
Note Your Goals & Concerns
Take a few minutes to write down any specific concerns, goals, or questions you want to discuss during your first visit.
Prepare for Your First Session

Understanding Your Insurance Benefits for Therapy
We accept most major insurance plans and will help you understand your coverage before you commit.
Summit Therapy accepts most major insurance plans, including Medicaid and private carriers. Before your first visit, our team will verify your benefits so you know exactly what's covered and what to expect.
Common insurance terms to know before your visit:
- Deductible: The amount you pay out of pocket before insurance kicks in.
- Copay: A fixed amount you pay per visit, regardless of the total cost.
- Authorization: Some plans require pre-approval before therapy begins. We handle this process for you.
- Out-of-Network: If we are not in-network with your plan, we can provide a superbill for you to submit for reimbursement.
Have questions about your specific plan? Call our Frisco or McKinney clinic and we'll walk you through it.
FAQs
The first visit is typically an evaluation session. Your therapist will use guided activities or conversation to understand your current skills, challenges, and goals, and to determine the best path forward. It’s low-pressure and designed to help you feel comfortable from the start.
Keep it simple. Think about what you’d like to work on and any concerns you want to discuss. For younger clients, caregivers can explain that therapy is a place to learn, play, and build new skills with support. Bringing a comfort item can also help ease first-time nerves.
Some insurance plans require a referral or prescription from a physician before therapy can begin. Our team will let you know if this applies to your plan when we verify your benefits. If you’re self-paying, a referral is not required.
Availability can vary, but we aim to schedule new patients as quickly as possible. Once you submit a request, our team will follow up within one business day with available appointment options.
